View Full Version : Wearing Glasses

I normally wear glasses, and have been getting away with surfing without them. However, time marches on and I'm at a point where I need to wear them out in the water. I never was able to get used to contacts and don't wear them.

I was looking at http://www.silverfish.com/ (which you can get in prescription) and was wondering if anyone had experience with these or any other types of water sports glasses.

make sure they have a leash of some sort!

A leash is high on the list. I'm so used to glasses, I've lost 2 pair by forgetting to take them off before going out. The last pair was in Sept when Florence passed by.

Lasik........if you can afford it.

Fresh was going to do lasik and at last minute, his gut told him not to. Later on, another optometrist checked his eyes and told him that he would have had terrible vision if he went through with it.

Another boyfriend had it done, it worked for him... 50/50 chance, I suppose.

Fresh can't see without his glasses. He went without for years... it's pretty pimp that magoo can tell a set and pick the best wave with bad vision. He's now using contacts. We'll see how that goes. There could be a possibility you'll develop dry eye syndrome. Be careful.

Oh, the goggles are helpful, but they look gay and there is a chance you'll lose them. Big waste of money if you have an expensive prescription.

I have talked to my optometrist about lasik, but he said I wasn't a candidate for it. It all depends on what actually wrong.

Besides I was going to get the silver frames, to match my hair. If they still look gay, I could always start surfing down at South Beach.

haha well i'm glad you have a sense of humor about it man. I myself am nearsighted (meaning i cant see far away for those of you that dont know what it means....) and I just cant stand wearing glasses. I wear contacts from the moment I wake up until right before I go to sleep. They're pretty good when surfing too, as long as you dont open your eyes underwater that is. I have yet to lose any while surfing. Sucks though cause I def miss opening my eyes underwater while duck diving a nice and clear wave....

Fresh has two pair. Trust me, they are GAY.

Dan, you wouldn't be saying that if that linebacker rode by your skinny behind. ;)

I've seen both goggle and the sunglass style (like silverfish) Which type does Fresh have??

At a certain point, having gray hair, a forehead that reaches the back of my neck and other assorted physical traits of the advanced years. What I look like to others isn't as important as enjoying what I do.

and i bet you wouldn't call his goggles gay if, unknown to you, he had a L eye astigmatism and R eye myopia. and if he was older than you- i.e. before lasik, before semi-perm contacts for astigmatism, etc...- and had no choice whatsoever except wearing goggles to skateboard- or, he could wear glasses. **glasses and kickflips down stairs don't work. if you knew all that, i truly hope you wouldn't be so quick to call them gay;) i would think he would like fabulous a little better. haha:)
and if the waves were up... we would all be surfing.
good stuff:)

if you can still pay the mortgage and pay ~150, just get 'em... the nba seems to like them. if they work for you, take solice in the thought that you could not possibly look any goofier than me learning to surf two short, emotionally painful yrs ago:cool:
peace, dan

I WISH he would wear speedos. Niiiice.

Buy the goggles. It's your money and your perogative. If you need them, get them enjoy them. I'm sure a man like you doesn't give a rats *** about my opinion. lol.

don't even bother buying glasses...they are such a pain in the butt...one there is great chance you will loose them because they are tight at the beginning but then the plastic start to loose its mechanical properties due to normal wear and sunlight.
then the biggest problem with any pair on the market is that you are doing a sport so basically your body is emitting heat which creates "fog" on the lenses.

I have looked at many forum and the best solution guys came up is to carry a liquid with them and apply it every 5 minutes in the water.

try new contacts or lasik.

i've been a diver since the '70s and to this day the best anti fog I've found is spit....
spit smear rinse, clear vision that simple :)

;) It's like the expression, "A happy life is a happy wife" Well, the balance of the oceans and universe as a whole is reliant on the visibility of surfers everywhere.
