I'm not sure i understand 100%, but I'm all for re-sanding most of our beaches.. it'll definately upgrade most of the junk beach breaks we already have anyways so i like the idea (i think)

I've never been to a Surfrider meeting. Can someone tell me what goes on at these events?

they wear white sheets and burn crosses. lol jk i've never been to one but I think they talk about ocean issues etc. stuff that should matter to surfers.

pumping sand onto the beach is okay IF and only IF you use the right type of sand. None of the recent projects in Palm Beach, Dade, or other counties has been doing this.

They use silt. Sure they call it sand but it is too fine to be classified as beach sand. When they use this crap, two things happen.

1. The fine particles get suspended in the water when the surf comes up making the water murky and cloudy. Then when it does finally settle out offshore a bit it buries and kills the coral.

2. Because it suspends it gets carried away faster.

Case and point Phipps park about a mile north of Lake Worth Pier. They pumped close to 100yards onto the beach. Yes a full football field worth of sand less than 2 years ago. It is all gone now, burying the reefs offshore, etc.

Ft. Lauderdale has the largest remaining stand of healthy Staghorn coral in the Caribbean basin in only about 10-12 feet of water. They pump the beach with silt and it's done.....forever.

Not to mention, the surf will suffer as well as it'll just be a shore pound.

Did the same thing here in Dania beach, renourished i think 2 years back and already half the sand is gone. waste of tax payers money (thats you) if you ask me. I actualy do research on the effect of sediement on corals for my job @ NCRI. lets just say it is really good at killing them:(

I highly recomend diving the Acropora cervicornis patches in Ft.laud before they are burried, they are beautiful

oh my gosh.. I had completely the wrong idea D:
This sounds horrible man, the sea life here in Florida is something to brag about imho, not something to forget about when making these decisions..
I hope they chose not to use something like silt..

Anyways, Anyone have more info on this reef? I would definately love to go dive it and get some pics before its gone.. snorklable or diving only?

the A. cerv. patches ive dove on are only in about 8-12ft and very near shore, and easy swim out from shore for a dive or snork. There is one just north of commercial pier, but there is research going on there so be careful not to desturb anything (ie controll your buoyancy if your diving) HAVE FUN

i heard a while ago that the cocoa/melbourne area had contracted someone to solve the exact problem discussed. here is their link:
http://www.asrltd.co.nz/Asr_services.htm
it has been a while since i looked the page over; one thing that did catch my eye was this:
http://www.asrltd.co.nz/downloads/Reefs/3rd%20Surfing%20Reef%20Conference%20Papers/Keynote%20address_Surfing%20Science.pdf

the science of surf:) they worked out the exact numerical formula for ideal breaks and they model the artificial reefs to that. but it goes into way more than math- it explains how we learn, what skills we learn, etc... and they take that into consideration for what they do. it's a hefty read, but well worth it.
