so, sights and sounds change... i am now even closer to the ocean- just S of jacksonville. actually, i am about 25 feet from the ocean! if a tsunami hits, i will let you know. the only thing between me and the open sea is a pod of wright whales that i haven't seen yet... but i hear they hug up real close to shore. and they are big.
so far, i have gone out twice- both times it was just too big. i have had my as$ handed to me both times. but i see a future of many, many good surf days for me. if there were more people out there, i would have some pics by now. never had that problem at ft pierce... ha. the most company i have had is the guy that caught a 300 lbs hammerhead about fifty feet from me. he was closer to the shore than i was. i might be typing with head-gear soon.
having said all of that, i have two sandbars at my front door. the first is pretty far out there... if it breaks, i will take pictures. the closer, second one seems to fire up best when i have to go to work at 730 am. it has really nice, clean lines and every day there are offshore winds in the morning. this weekend it will be in the 30's at 730 am. it is a different cold here... i have already felt days that were colder than any i have felt in orlando or tampa.
i always trusted magicseaweed for a general "feel" of a break... they are surprisingly accurate. they rank breaks with **... the most i have ever seen in stuart was three solid stars... four days in the past week were four to four and a half solid stars here. unreal.:)

welcome back dan the man, good to hear you've got better surfing digs than myself. I didnt realize there was that much of a temperature difference between here and Jacksonville, unreal. Cold waves feel like home to me, I'll have to trek up there with my wetsuit and check it out:)

dan , u area lucky man.
i don't know if i would go quite that far... i had to go through (and lose) quite a bit to get here and be cool with it.
my home is always open. it is a zen-like existence these days... but it works for me!:) i work banker's hours, so weekends are all surf and danweiser (gatorade)... i know how to host a surf party, too:rolleyes:
sprocket, i seem to remember daytona from an earlier post of yrs... if it is a recurring thing, just head thirty miles further N.

i didn't appreciate how much the gulf stream helped keep my boys warm... i am going to have to rename myself to turtle-boy. i am at the very end of being able to handle the cold with just board shorts. it is going into the high 20's/low 30's tomorrow night. i think my home is just concrete poured into a small mold... there is no insulation and you can feel the heat radiating away real quick at night:mad: i am not a small guy- but the S fla weather is what i have spent my whole life in. everything is different here- the trees, the birds, etc... even what they sell at publix. it is always the little things that surprise you. i have to go one exit N on I95 (no more sunpass... woohoo!)... all the trucks are logging trucks. there are two libraries in this whole county... i asked if i could get online to get books from other libraries... hahaha! this entire region is at least ten yrs behind everyone else. it is odd- but simple and comfortable. i see the same three or four cops every day. that is new. there are more city and county parks than mcdonalds... that is definitely new. if you like concrete- this is not the place. people go to bed at 9pm here. everyone does. but the roads are packed at 6 am. there is no target or anything besides wal-mart. there are thriving music stores... some awesome surf shops that actually sell more than 10 boards, etc. it is a culture shock, but i am finding it real easy to get used to. it is heaven if you like lonely, beautiful sandbar breaks. the erosion here is ten times worse than anything i saw down there... even jupiter.
i should get some good pics during my frostbite treatment this weekend!

Jacksonville is fun if you know the right crowd. The surf is good if you know the secret spots. Moving isn't fun, but it's worth it sometimes. :) Best of Luck to you Dan.

thank you very much:) good wishes are much appreciated and nice to hear.
as for the surf... i have no complaints aside from working my butt off... but it makes me appreciate the time i do have out there. weekends are all mine aside from an occasional saturday. the water temp is cooler by far... but with the good groundswells, a cold creeps up like i have never felt before. i am still looking for a good book or two on the area and the geography. and stop whatever yr doing and go hug a library... i never have been so aware of my underappreciation of the library system down there. two libraries in the whole county!! that is stunning to me.
as for everything else... simplicity has been the key to keeping my sanity. i have never lived so simple and it really works for me. it is not for everyone... but i live so cheap and i create so little waste...
anyhooo... here are some pics of my front yard. one of my first surf pics, too... i have never had mellow, super-clean lines to practice on... good stuff

i just thought the tuxes were hilarious:)
as far as the solitude... i wouldn't mind at least one or two other people out there (and there are... the really, really nice days get busy).
keep in mind you give up any form or shape of night-life around here, too. i am very fortunate i have a good group of friends in orlando to get the crazy out of my system every few weeks.
i leave all my windows open and my only worry is rain:rolleyes: . i cannot see myself here forever- but i am going to enjoy it while it lasts.

when you can surf all the time what do you need night life for. you'll be too tired anyhow.

dan, that first pic up there was just ridiculous! i'm green with jealous rage! haha hope everything is going good up there for ya so far. I feel your pain on the whole nightlife aspect. There's not much of that here in abilene, tx lol. Its all what you make it man!

Dan

mike- that is the sandbar right out front. it gets jacked up pretty damn nice when a healthy swell hits it.
today has been the first day i didn't get a brief morning session in... it was too flat. i am getting real surf muscles!
i hear everyone on the nightlife thing. i am the type of person that is cool until i can't do something. then it drives me crazy. i like to take water into waiting rooms that have "no food or drinks". and yr right, 311... i am so tired between work and the chilly surf every morning. it is still good to know orlando is a modest drive away and i always have awesome friends to be around.
surfing in the fog is surreal... you feel isolated and so alone out there. i know noone is watching me because they can't. and you have to be quick because you see that swell with only a second or two to react.
i miss warm water... this water just pulls the strength out of me. if my hands or face is cold, i am cold. no matter what. hot-hands are my new best friends... if you know the product, then you understand why... best nut-warmers ever.
there will be a nice swell for all of us next week... looks like wed/thurs... i will get some pics up.
peace, dan

buy some 5ml gloves and a thin hood and you should be all set, some split toe booties if you get really cold, takes a while to suit up but its worth it to be comfortable out there (trust me I learned to surf while navigating around Ice chunks:))
