Kechele is always a good choice, but there are a lot of great shapers around. Personally I would go with a fish but I'm sure you'll get all kinds of good advice from the crew here.

Sera,
where are you located? How much do you weigh (important to know when calculating for float).
Depending on what type of surfing you are planning to do will be a big part of what type of stick you should get.
Word of caution though A 6'8 from 17 years ago had ALOT more float than a 6'8" of today as boards have gotten alot thinner....

unless it's a composite board then it might float the same even though it's thinner....

I had a longer break between my first life as a surfer and my second. I tried to go back to the size I used to surf and it was a disaster. I ended up purchasing a longer board just to get back into shape and then went to a shorter board. I still use the long board here and there, its about having fun.

Living in S FL you need at least 2 boards. An LB to ride when it's knee high and a good shortboard for the 5 times a year we get real waves. I also ride a fun shape for the in-between days (chest high mush).
you are similar weight to me and here is what I ride
6'10" short board - Natural Art (thanks primate!)
7'8" funshape - CC Rider composite
9'6" Bruce Jones - also a composite board (see pic on my avatar)
the BJ is a cali shape the others are pure Florida.

5'11 185 pounder
7'6 Charlie Baldwin Funshape - ripple chaser
6'1 Mayo Bonzer - all-around
6'4 Orion - Reef Road on special days (Thanks Sprocket :p)
I prefer 3 for South Florida because you always have friends that wanna come and play around as well.

tru tru..
my quiver goes something like this:
9'0" Stewart Longboard - sometimes fun
8'0" South Point Funshape (as Sippi says - ripple chaser) this board is great for anything
6'6" Sharp Eye - ehhhhh...mixed feelings on this one
6'6" Lost Shark - all around good
Dats all folks!
I ride my 5'10" CLITT WIDLER in everything - WHY? BECAUSE I'M A MAN! Yeah... Thats why!!!! Bet you wish you had a board like me!
