the wind chop season is on the way. i am praying that this year is better then last year. south of palm beach was pancake city, jupiter north on the other hand had a lot of surf.
Oh Dan... someone needs your assistance!
ask, and you shall receive
first- the sand from africa has suppressed EVERYTHING that could have blown up into a category four or five storm... see pics (sand gets into the air from the ground to the stratosphere and acts like cloud seeding... the storms rain away all their power); and the upper level winds have stayed oddly strong to the W- they are keeping what storms we have had from becoming the monsters they could- the atlantic is really, really warm.

add to this that we have an el nino starting surprisingly strong, and i would think it is really unlikely that we we will have a major hurricane close enough to make the swells what we all are thinking of (it looks like the panhandle and louisiana and texas have a little to worry about). however... i will not be at all surprised if winter kicks off big and stays that way. this past weekend was the first time i really saw how cape canaveral can block off the swell for st lucie and northern martin cty.
on the other hand, i have seen some really impresive swells this mth and last... location, location, location, tide, and timing. the new buoys are really good because they are near-shore and that tells you so much more than one 40 miles out to sea- i am pretty sure i have said this before, but it is a huge deal... the gulf stream can beat down an amazing swell, and these buoys are really close to where we are going to actually be surfing.
of course, i say all this and we are just two yrs away from five or six major hurricanes hitting fla. we just had a friday the 13th- the last one i remember is august 2004- charley came through orlando... we had ~30K damage to our house in altamonte springs... we had at least six tornadoes within a mile of us- and my dumb *** was outside for the whole storm and i am pretty sure one of them went through our backyard.
if you want to know what is going to happen, watch the big H over the mid-atlantic- it moved west and the whole state got torn up the past two yrs; this yr it stayed further east, and all the storms curved north way before they got near us.
2004/2005 broke so many statistical formulas- hurricanes do not hit the same spot twice; or the same state so many times in such a short period of time- but here we are.
i'm not a "the sky is falling" kind of person; but anyone who thinks that we are not affecting the earth in a huge way should get a solid kick in the ***- yeah, everything is cyclical and ever-changing... but on a scale of decades; not from yr to yr.
it is going to rain a lot this winter; but that means powerful low pressure off n carolina that sends those amazing northeast swells our way. i am just going to practice with what i've got now for then.

what i have seen so far is that any jetty or reef break gives the swells that extra little kick to build up the swells and if the wind and tide cooperate, then we all have fun and i get to post more pics, too.
also on the plus side, global warming is going to make the extremes more and more dramatic- the lulls will last longer; but the big swells are going to be inversely larger (i'm trying to be optimistic).
at the end of the day, who knows... everyone from the incredibly poor news coverage around here to the data-crunching geeks have been way wrong about a lot lately. and i don't know about everyone else, but i am going out whether i use my board as a raft or have those great days where i get ride after ride and get beat up.
on a tangent, i read a study where they had a hundred or so surgical patients that were split up- a third of them healed in a normal, sterile room; the second third went to the beach and recovered within earshot of the surf; and the final third were exposed to white noise machines that made wave sounds... the first group healed at a normal rate; the second two groups healed 29% faster... i have no idea why this happened and the dr's offered no hypothesis aside from the rhythm of the surf obviously being therapeutic. it is kind of like mozart with babies- they learn faster and are statistically healthier if they are exposed to mozart in the womb and during the first few yrs (i heard georgia gives mozart cd's to expectant mothers!). it doesn't happen with bach or beethoven- just mozart...
from hurricanes to surgery to mozart, i want to know what is happening- but not knowing the why part is cool with me. i had an acl sx a yr ago this may and my physical therapist was stunned with my recovery... my dad got me a radio with "ocean sounds" on it. maybe a placebo effect or maybe there is something to it. i healed quicker- that is enough for me.
i hope i came somewhere near answering the question at hand and a number of other questions noone asked:eek:
peace- dan

i just borrowed it- NASA gets so possessive over their space shuttles:rolleyes:
check this out... many nights of telescope shots and photoshop to blend thirty-something images together!! i have not tried anything with the new camera yet- but rest assured... i'll bug NASA for the shuttle again. and i am not paying for the fuel this time

Dan have you read Waves and Beaches by Willard Bascom? Strongly suggested reading, alhough out of print for 25 years it is still considered THE text on the subject.
