hurricanes- where and when??

this will be my first season on the east coast for hurricanes... where is the best place for the hurricane to be/moving and how crazy can it (or i guess i mean has it over the past two yrs) get? i can't remember if it was jeanne or frances that sat over the bahamas for a few days- but i would think that was pretty amazing.
anyhoo... if anyone has any anecdotal info, please let me know!
