Hey...just learning to surf...stood up on my board for the first time the other day...most of my friends aren't into surfing, so if anyone is ever in the neighborhood, throw me a message or email if you wanna paddle out...I'm in the miami beach area...gonna post this in the dade county section too

congrats- i am only two yrs from where you are... if you can manage the small surf, the bigger swells will make you very, very happy. i have said this a hundred times- but learn the national weather service site!!
peace, dan

what kind of board do you use? you will see how big of a roll a board plays once you get a better grasp of wave conditions and your own style and progression

I'm using a 6'8 Kechele right now...It would be best, for now, if I had something a bit bigger...but I'm gonna just keep plugging along...
I've been told for my size (I'm about 5'3 and 1/2) and about 135lbs or so, that the Kechele should be okay...but we'll see..any advice would be appreciated though..

That should do you pretty good. Good float, easier turning than a longboard but not quite as squirelly as a wafer. You'll do good, just don't get frustrated.

the board is good for you right now. Quest hit all the right points.

Work on timing and standing up as you drop into the wave.

I grew up in Ft. Laud and know first hand the difficulty you are dealing with (size, shape of wave).

Just go out every time it's at least a foot...there are more days than you think. What part of Miami beach are you on?

South Beach gets really crowded and not beginner friendly. There are other places to go that are more user friendly....

Hey man, I live in the north end of the beach...like 96th street...so in relationship to Harbour House, I am about a 5 minute walk...I think I am gonna stick around the area just south of there...its pretty chill and I at least see some familiar faces out there...like you said Sproket, South Beach gets super nuts..and I'm not looking to get into anything crazy..just wanna have some fun...
thanks for all the advice..keep it coming people...

for sobe hit the 5th / 6th street line. the 1st - 3rd crowd rarely overlaps down there. it is little bit less of a wave but almost always with 1/5 of the people. it is also a killer spot to practice on low to incoming tide. i've been there on many occassions and watched 100 - 200 people around 1st to 3rd and not a single person on the 5th / 6th street line wave. the big reason is you have to walk a little to get to it, and most people don't want to walk, plus lets not forget the herd mentality. people see the herd (1st - 3rd) and simply join. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that or right with that it's just how things are.

Hey brother I am in South Dade and have in the past bypassed Dade County, occassionally surfed Haulover or Harbour. I am 45-60 min. from beach but plan to hit up Dade more often this spring as well as points north. I will p.m. you.
