My roommate is a web designer. He gets anywhere from 2k-10k for his work. Little a-hole.

first know your PC in and out, then read - "teach yourself HTML in 21 Days" then you will be at a great starting point. The next step is to get into learning how to write Java Script, once you understand that then step it up to learning how to program in C. If you can learn C then you can learn any language. Once you have learned C now study a web language like either: PHP, ASP, CFM, or JSP. I suggest PHP. After you get through all that now start focusing on shell scripting for Unix and Linux, and DNS. Programs like Photoshop, and Flash, play with those on your spare time.

for a decent "get what you pay for" web host: www.neureal.com (http://www.neureal.com)

A thing you must know about my roommate: he's been doing programming since he was 14. He's 20 now. He knows just about everything about programming, graphic design, diverse programs, etc etc. He also sits at his computer 14 hours a day and has no life, no girlfriend, and just me to look at as I skimp around the house.

I am a webmaster, but I know nothing compared to many people out there.

Ditto VW's post.

I own a web design/graphics company (ftadesigns.com).

THere are plenty of tutorials out there.

Learn XHTML and CSS, along with everything VW mentioned.....
If you really want to make money, it's on the backend programming side which seques back to the stay in school thread....

Sure did.. everything except for the MySQL / PHP powered surf gallery and poll on the front page. Brett Liotta, former PB County amateur surf star turned programmer wrote the coding for those.

If you got time check out another site we did (I did the front end, Brett did the back end): www.grademypet.com (http://www.grademypet.com)

dreamweaver is a good tool.. that is what I use too. It speeds things up. Before coding with dreamweaver I first learned how to hand code.

Patience and Google are your friends when learning HTML.

The best part is you can just "view source" from sites you like and grab the bits of code you want and re-style/re-use them.

Search for template sites, no need to re-invent the wheel. Just take a screenshot of a template idea you like and re-create it. By the time you add in your color scheme/logos/content, the look and feel will have changed a bit.

Definately use CSS to style all your content. It makes life easy when it's time to update/change things.

thx! which one - surfxtc or grademypet?

Both came from a rooted love of art/design/expression and a motivation to learn and have fun. 1000's of hours have gone into the design and then redesign / back end development of SurfXTC.com as well as GradeMyPet.com.

by the way - no templates used here, all original design and flow. ;)

I remember those days... I used to be so broke, I would walk around and ask for money in lunch so I could have gas to drive to the beach that day.

If you are really into website design, go for it, but I don't recommend it for everyone (as these guys will tell you). If you have add forget about it. lol.

"by the way - no templates used here, all original design and flow."

You sure about that? The footer of this page says differently:

"vBulletin Style By: SixteenOhNine" ;)

Just giving you a hard time.

I just did my first php upload/image gallery and I about pulled my hair out, that was after I crashed the server with a never-ending loop statement!
Luckily the image uploads is for the client only so I password protected it so I didn't need to run nearly as much error checking/injection tests on it. Getting the code to work is the easy part, doing the error checking/security is where it gets tedious, in my php newbie opinion.

Ball buster knows what I mean

I wasn't a big fan of the programming side either. It's a necessary evil though. :o
